Morocco's Garden Culture

A Living Heritage of Gardens

Morocco's garden tradition stretches back over a thousand years, blending Andalusian, Berber and French colonial influences into landscapes of extraordinary beauty.

🌳

The Andalusian Tradition

Moroccan garden design draws heavily from Moorish Andalusia, with its love of geometric water features, shaded courtyards and fragrant plantings that cool the desert air. The concept of the garden as paradise is embedded in Islamic garden philosophy.

🌞

French Colonial Legacy

During the French Protectorate era, European botanists and artists discovered Morocco's climate and transformed parts of Marrakech into extraordinary garden estates. Jacques Majorelle's vision — realised between 1923 and 1962 — remains the most iconic example of this period.

🌿

Botanical Collections

Marrakech's gardens house thousands of plant species from across the world — from Moroccan endemic cacti and succulents to sub-Saharan palms, South American bamboos and Mediterranean olive groves. The diversity reflects centuries of trade and exploration.

🏔

Royal Garden Heritage

Many of Marrakech's oldest gardens — including the Agdal and Menara — were created as royal retreats and agricultural estates for the Saadian and Alaouite dynasties. These UNESCO-listed landscapes blend irrigation engineering with aesthetic refinement.

🌤

Year-Round Appeal

Unlike northern European gardens that close in winter, Marrakech's gardens remain open throughout the year. Each season brings a different character — spring roses, summer bougainvillea, autumn colours and mild winter sunshine that makes the gardens particularly enjoyable from October to April.

Photography & Art

Marrakech's gardens have inspired generations of painters, photographers and designers. The vivid cobalt-blue architecture of Jardin Majorelle, the reflective pool of Menara and the rose-draped walls of Marrakech's riads have become some of the most photographed scenes in North Africa.

Jardin Majorelle

Visitor Information & Ticket Guide

Jardin Majorelle is Marrakech's most visited garden. This section compiles independently gathered information about entry options, opening times and what to expect inside.

About Jardin Majorelle

Jardin Majorelle was created by French painter Jacques Majorelle, who began developing the property in 1923. Over four decades he transformed a plot of land in what was then the outskirts of Marrakech into an extraordinary botanical garden and artist's studio, painting the walls in the brilliant cobalt blue that now bears his name — Majorelle Blue.

In 1980, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé purchased the garden from its declining state and restored it to its current form. Following YSL's death in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden's rose beds. Today the property is managed by the Fondation Jardin Majorelle and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech.

What's Inside

The garden contains over 300 plant species arranged around a central pool and the striking blue villa. The property includes the Berber Museum (Musée de la Berberie), housing a collection of traditional Berber artefacts, as well as access paths through the cactus garden, bamboo grove and palm alleys. The adjacent Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech is a separate ticketed institution located just outside the garden walls.

Opening Hours (General Information)

The garden is generally open daily from the morning through the early evening, with slight seasonal variation. Hours tend to be shorter in summer due to heat. The garden is typically busiest mid-morning and at midday; early morning opening or late afternoon visits tend to be less crowded. Always verify current hours directly through official sources before visiting, as schedules can change without notice.

Art & Museums

Culture Around the Garden

The Majorelle estate and surrounding Guéliz district are home to world-class art institutions that make any garden visit a full cultural experience.

Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech

Opened in 2017 adjacent to the garden, the Musée YSL Marrakech is a world-renowned fashion museum dedicated to the work of Yves Saint Laurent, who drew deep inspiration from Morocco. The building's exterior is clad in a latticework of terracotta bricks inspired by Moroccan zellige tilework. Exhibitions rotate regularly and include couture garments, sketches and multimedia installations.

Musée de la Berberie (Berber Museum)

Located within the Jardin Majorelle itself, the Berber Museum is housed in Jacques Majorelle's original studio. It presents a remarkable collection of traditional Berber clothing, jewellery, weapons and everyday objects assembled by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé over four decades. The collection is a significant record of Amazigh material culture.

Majorelle's Art & Cobalt Blue

Jacques Majorelle developed a particular shade of vivid cobalt blue — registered as Bleu Majorelle — which he used to paint his studio and the garden's walls, pots and fountains. The colour became synonymous with the garden and has influenced design, fashion and photography worldwide. Visiting allows you to experience the original setting that inspired this iconic aesthetic.

Marrakech Gardens

Other Famous Gardens to Visit

Marrakech is home to several remarkable gardens beyond Majorelle, each with its own history, character and visitor experience.

Royal Garden
Menara Gardens

One of Marrakech's oldest gardens, the Menara was created in the 12th century as an orchard and reservoir for the Almohad dynasty. Its large reflecting pool, surrounded by olive trees and framed by the Atlas Mountains, is one of the most iconic views in Morocco. The central pavilion was rebuilt in the 19th century and is used for traditional events and performances.

Historic Estate
Agdal Gardens

Stretching over 400 hectares south of the Royal Palace, the Agdal Gardens form a vast agricultural estate planted with olive, orange and fig trees, all irrigated by an ancient system of channels fed by the Atlas Mountains. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Agdal has been continuously cultivated since the 12th century and remains an active working orchard.

Medina Garden
Le Jardin Secret

Hidden within the medina walls, Le Jardin Secret (The Secret Garden) was a private estate restored and opened to the public in 2016. It features two distinct garden types — an Islamic garden and an exotic garden — housed within a beautifully restored 19th-century riad. A water tower offers panoramic views across the medina rooftops.

Urban Park
Cyber Parc Arsat Moulay Abdeslam

A smaller but charming public garden near the medina, the Cyber Parc offers shaded walks, fountains and free public Wi-Fi — a rare combination in central Marrakech. The garden was restored in partnership with the Mohammed VI Foundation and provides a quiet retreat from the bustle of the nearby Jemaa el-Fna.

Trip Planning

How to Plan Your Garden Visit

Practical advice for getting the most out of your visit to Marrakech's gardens, from the best time of year to what to bring.

Visitor Tips

1

Book Majorelle Tickets in Advance

Jardin Majorelle limits daily visitor numbers. Tickets sell out frequently during peak months (December–March and July). Always book through the official site ahead of your visit rather than arriving at the gate.

2

Arrive Early or Late Afternoon

The garden is busiest between 10:00 and 14:00. Arriving at opening time or two hours before closing gives you a calmer, less crowded experience and better conditions for photography in the golden light.

3

Allow Time for the Museums

Budget at least 30 minutes for the Berber Museum inside the garden. If you plan to visit the YSL Museum next door, add another 60–90 minutes. The two together make a full half-day cultural itinerary.

4

Dress Appropriately

While Jardin Majorelle does not enforce a strict dress code, comfortable shoes are essential for the garden paths. In summer, a hat and sunscreen are strongly recommended as shade can be limited in parts of the garden.

5

Getting There

Jardin Majorelle is located in the Guéliz district, about 2 km from the medina. It is reachable by taxi (petit taxi — agree on the price beforehand), bus line 11, or on foot from the medina in about 25 minutes. Parking is limited; public transport is recommended.
